Mobility plan proposes community route reviews and better maps for travel
Residents could help identify difficult crossings, gaps between paths and hazards near schools under a proposed Bainbridge Island mobility work plan for 2026–2027.
Bainbridge Island residents could help identify gaps in walking and biking routes and improve maps for people traveling without cars under a proposed Mobility Advisory Committee work plan for 2026–2027.
The revised plan goes to the City Council on October 27.
It calls for community walking, biking and rolling “audits” in 2027. These are reviews of routes to identify problems such as difficult crossings, missing connections and hazards near schools. The committee would present its findings to the council.
The committee would also help develop printed and digital route maps. That work could include traveling walking and biking routes to assess what information the maps should provide.
The proposals fit within the city’s broader effort to expand alternatives to driving. Its 2025 Climate Action Plan annual report identifies creation of the mobility committee as a climate action, alongside goals to reduce driving per person and increase walking and cycling.
Other proposed committee tasks include reviewing the Island-Wide Mobility Plan, studying places where different transportation options connect, and helping staff develop a process for residents to request traffic calming and small transportation projects.
The work plan was revised following a September 15 council study session. It now proposes inviting representatives of other city advisory committees to participate in mobility discussions rather than forming a joint subcommittee.
The plan would authorize advisory work and recommendations. Decisions to build paths, improve crossings or develop transportation connections would require further action. The Mobility Advisory Committee meets monthly on the first Wednesday of the month at City Hall. More information on the committee’s page here.
